Christmas breaks in Scotland at Ness Walk Hotel

Few places capture the spirit of the season like Christmas in the Highlands. Here on the leafy banks of the River Ness, open fires glow in our drawing rooms, and the city lights shimmer on the water. As a result, our festive breaks in Scotland offer the perfect blend of celebration and calm.

Whether you’re planning a romantic Christmas getaway in Scotland or a gathering with the whole family, our festive calendar has something for every occasion. What’s more, every celebration pairs beautifully with an overnight stay. So, you can raise a glass in the evening and wake to a Highland breakfast by the river the next morning.

Torrish Restaurant festive dining

Our elegant Torrish Restaurant sits within the original drawing room of the 5-star Ness Walk Hotel. With a cosy fire, traditional features and sensational views out to the River Ness, Torrish is the perfect setting for a special festive lunch or dinner.

Throughout the season, our chefs bring a festive touch to the menu, using the finest local ingredients. Meanwhile, for those who love a more leisurely treat, our festive afternoon tea brings scones, sandwiches and cakes to your table by the fire. In addition, our pre-Christmas lunches are ideal for catching up with colleagues or friends throughout December.

Scottish Christmas traditions

Scotland celebrates the festive season in its own way, and many Scottish Christmas traditions centre on the new year rather than Christmas itself. In fact, Christmas Day only became a public holiday in Scotland in 1958. For centuries before that, Hogmanay was the main event of the season.

Today, Hogmanay customs remain a much-loved part of the Scottish winter. First-footing, for example, sees the first visitor of the new year bring gifts to bring good luck to the household. Similarly, the singing of Robert Burns’ “Auld Lang Syne” at the bells is now heard around the world.

Old traditions carry on into January, too. Handsel Monday, the first Monday of the new year, was once a day for giving gifts and celebrating with family. At Ness Walk Hotel, we mark it with our Auld Handsel celebration. Likewise, our Yuletide Festive Dining Experience is a nod to the older winter festivals that came before.

Things to do in Inverness in December

Inverness in December is ideal for festive strolls and evenings out. For instance, the city centre is a short walk from the hotel, making it easy to browse local shops for Christmas gifts. On the opposite bank of the river, Eden Court Theatre presents Cinderella as its family pantomime this year. The show runs from 2 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, so it’s a perfect treat during a stay with us.

Closer to home, you can get creative at one of our wreath-making or festive table arrangement sessions. For more ideas and the latest Christmas events in Inverness, our concierge team will be happy to help.
