South Loch Ness Trail
The South Loch Ness Trail offers a memorable walk or cycle alongside the beautiful Loch Ness. Taking in stunning views, quiet villages and lochside scenery, it tends to be quieter than the busier northern side of the loch. Only a short journey from Ness Walk Hotel in Inverness, it makes for a great day out to explore this part of the country towards Fort Augustus. And then, at the end, return to your hotel for a delicious dinner and relaxing night in your luxurious room.
Enjoying the South Loch Ness Trail
Stretching around 36 miles (58 km), the South Loch Ness Trail runs from Torbearn on the southern outskirts of Inverness to the beautiful village of Fort Augustus at the far end of Loch Ness.
The trail officially begins in the Torbreck woods area, located just outside the southern boundary of Inverness. By car, this is less than a 15-minute drive. Alternatively, you can begin at Dores, a beautiful lochside village around 20 minutes south of the hotel. Here you can enjoy gorgeous views across Loch Ness. If you are looking for transport to this area, our Ness Walk reception staff are happy to advise or arrange transport for you.
What to expect
Unlike the busier northern shore of the loch, the south side is sparsely populated and far more tranquil. It’s a great walk to spend time with yourself. Tall pines line much of the path and, as you follow the loch southwards, views of the loch appear and disappear around corners and trees.
The route is well signposted. However, some sections are gravel forestry roads while others are narrower footpaths. This means a reasonable level of fitness is required, as are sturdy walking boots.
A highlight of this trail is the area around Foyers, where the path leads through towering woodland before arriving at the dramatic Falls of Foyers. This is a beautiful waterfall, plunging nearly 140 feet into a gorge. It’s an ideal photo opportunity to remember your trip.
This whole area is a haven for wildlife. Red squirrels, pine martens and even golden eagles have all been spotted in the area.
The trail eventually leads to Fort Augustus, where you can watch boats navigate the lock gates of the Caledonian Canal whilst you sit supping on a well-earned drink at one of the many cafes or pubs.
When to walk the trail?
One of the best times of year to walk the South Loch Ness Trail is from spring to early autumn, when the daylight hours are longer and the paths are more likely to be dry underfoot. Although busier, you have more daylight within which to enjoy the scenery.
Returning to Ness Walk Hotel after exploring the trail is its own reward. As beautiful as this walk is, and for all the health benefits that our Highland air brings, there’s sometimes nothing better than sitting back on your kingsize bed and letting your body rest. Don’t forget to rise and come down for a beautiful dinner, using local and seasonal ingredients in our Torrish restaurant. Book your stay at Ness Walk today.
