Walking Glen Affric.
Ness Walk

Loch Affric Circuit

The Loch Affric Circuit is an unforgettable experience filled with ancient forest, shimmering lochs and remarkable mountain views. Guests of Ness Walk often ask us what the most beautiful glen is, and we have to agree with the majority – Glen Affric is unbeatable. That’s what makes this walk one to enjoy when you are keen to explore the outdoors of Scotland.

Getting there from Ness Walk Hotel

Loch Affric is a little under 90 minutes by car from Ness Walk. And it’s a stunning drive, one to give you a taste of things to come. It will take you through remote lands where wildlife can be seen from all windows – even above! The Loch Affric circuit is one for those seeking solace and solitude, as there are no cafes or shops in the area to stock up on snacks.

Loch Affric Circuit Route

The Loch Affric Circuit is a roughly 11-mile (18 km) loop. It circles the entire loch and depending on your pace, can take between 4-6 hours to complete. It’s a fairly gentle route, with well-maintained paths but with views worth the exertion. If you walk clockwise, you’ll get the best views first.

From the car park, you’ll follow the trail along the northern side of Loch Affric. This will take you through some native Caledonian pine forest, which is a remnant of Scotland’s ancient woodland. It was this which once covered most of the country before farming resulted in increased arable land. This is a location where you can see wildlife that lives only in this area. The ancient pinewoods are home to Scottish crossbills, a bird unique to Scotland that is found nowhere else in the world.

At the far end of the loch, the trail loops around and returns via the southern shore. Depending on the time of year, you may pass wildflowers, deer or even a cheeky odd Highland cow wondering what you are doing.

The trail

While the path is clearly defined and signposted, it’s recommended you plan ahead with good footwear like walking boots. The ground can be muddy and boggy, especially after rainy periods.

The trail tends to be quietest in winter, with most visitors in summer. Any time of year is good to explore this area, with the landscape changing dramatically from season to season. Whilst summer offers lush greens and blue skies, the sharpness of winter reveals a landscape which thrives with life even in the harshest conditions.

A stunning Highland walk

After completing the loop, the journey back to Inverness means you can look forward to comfortable beds, luxurious bedding and a warm bubble bath in which to soak. Perhaps even enjoy some dinner in our Torrish Restaurant, like locally caught lobster or perfectly seasoned risotto.

The Loch Affric Circuit offers Highland air away from the crowds, the perfect retreat for those at Ness Walk seeking time to rebalance. Our 47 spacious and stylish en-suite rooms are comfortable, and our staff will welcome and help you with any of your needs.  Book your stay with us today and begin planning your Highland adventures.
