The Singleton Visitor Centre at Glen Ord Distillery is a great day out for guests of Ness Walk Hotel, just 14 miles southeast of Inverness.

“I shine not burn”

Glen Ord Distillery dates from 1838, when Thomas Mackenzie of the Mackenzie clan founded it on family land. The land had been with the Mackenzies since the mid-13th century, and it was the perfect location for a distillery due to its previous use as barley fields and its location close to the water sources Loch nam Bonnach and Loch nan Eun. The distillery’s motto “Luceo non uro” comes from Clan Mackenzie. It means “I shine not burn”, reflecting the slow and steady way that whisky is produced here. Glen Ord call it “slow craft”, using traditional long fermentation and slow distillation techniques.

The Singleton Visitor Centre

The Singleton Visitor Centre at Glen Ord Distillery is a 5-star visitor attraction, open year-round and offers a range of fantastic tours and experiences. It centre has a bar, deli and whisky shop. Here, you can sample drams and cocktails, enjoy local Scottish produce, and pick up gifts and souvenirs to take home.

Distillery tours take visitors through the entire whisky-making process, from malting to mashing, then fermentation to distillation. There’s also the opportunity to try three unique expressions at the end of the tour.
